What is Stephen Ministry?
“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2)

Stephen Ministry is a globally recognized program celebrating 50 years of equipping lay caregivers. Our trained members provide confidential, one-to-one emotional and spiritual support to those navigating life’s most difficult seasons, including, but not limited to:

  • Caring for aging parents or terminal illness.
  • Navigating divorce, separation, or unemployment.
  • Major life transitions (adoption, marriage, or relocation).
  • Loss of a loved one

How the Process Works
  1. Initial Assessment: A Stephen Leader meets with the potential "care receiver" to ensure the ministry is the right fit.
  2. The Match: Care receivers are matched by gender (men with men, women with women).
  3. Consistent Care: Your Stephen Minister will typically meet with you in person once a week for about an hour to listen and provide non-judgmental, confidential support.

Want to Become a Stephen Minister?

Stephen Ministry is a proven and effective way to organize, equip, and support a team of congregation members - called Stephen Ministers - to provide high-quality, one-to-one, Christ-Centered care to people in the congregation who are experiencing life difficulties.


“Caregivers” are Stephen Ministers. Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by their Stephen Leaders to offer confidential care to people who are hurting. A Stephen Minister typically has one care receivers at a time and meets with that person once a week for about an hour.


“Stephen Ministers are the Caregivers, God the Cure-giver”

Care Receivers are individuals in the congregation who are going through a life difficulty. Potential care receivers first meet with a Stephen Leader, who assesses their need for care and then matches them with a Stephen Minister. The confidential caring relationship lasts for as long as the need persists.


Stephen Leaders are church members who are trained as lay leaders to provide ongoing leadership for the congregation’s Stephen Ministry. They are equipped for this key role through the Stephen Leader Training Course offered by Stephen Ministries in St. Louis.
