A Year-End Summary of the Elder’s Top
Church Priorities for 2006
- Top church priority: Sharpening our Vision: Missional
Living
“As we sharpen our vision,
what must we do to be a missional church?”
- Discussions and retreats in the Spring on missional living
- Connecting with God sermon emphasis and with 24/7, 40
day prayer emphasis
- Elder connecting:
- Congregation (including the elder’s agenda, feedback,
input)
- Four congregational meetings with more preliminary discussions;
quick responses to questions for elders
- Prayer
- Brought a number of people to elders for healing & other
needs
- Staff
- Various staff join elders for prayer and presentation
of their ministry activities
- Other groups within the church (e.g. Sunday school classes).Various
elders attended mid-size groupings
- Caring for the staff:
- Personnel advisory group
- Comprehensive revision of staff titles and salaries
- Ongoing committee that will continue to address upcoming
personnel matters
- University/Young Adult and Community minister searches
- Completed with permanent hiring of Scott Vermillion (U/YA) & proposed
hiring of David Ward (Community)
- Staff relationships
- Prioritize to meet regularly as pastoral team of pastors
and ministers
- Transitions
- Designation of Cindy Broderius, Laurie Newell, & Vickie
Turner to minister positions
- Encouraging, nurturing, oversee initiatives (in
no particular order):
- Strengthen cross-cultural partnerships
- Mission team to Nairobi, Oscar Muriu & Jane Wathami
visit here; A mission team to South Africa, Vincent Nyathi
visits here, $20,000 donation to Powerhouse, collected
at Christmas eve services; Outreach to Hispanics with tutoring
in Durham; work with VBS in Durham
- Emmaus Way
- Development of home base, service and worship orientation,
Tim full time
- Chatham Church plant
- Commissioned by the Bible Church, meeting Sunday mornings
beginning I February, begin search for pastor, building
community and vision
- Study issue: women in leadership
- Elders discuss twice in special meetings; met with four
women; presentation and discussion in several Sunday
School classes
- Leadership Development Team
- Year-long research and proposal; three pilot Turbo groups
have begun training from January to May, 2007
- Racial reconciliation and justice
- Growing sense of movement towards understanding, ML King
honored
- Exploring building planning/ space issues
- Informal discussions of needs; no new plans
