Hospice Prayer/Care Shawls

Hospice care has a practice of donating a "care shawl" or prayer shawl to their patients who would like one. These are hand-knitted or crocheted shawls for the patient to wrap up in and to remind him someone cares and is praying for him. Those making the shawls purchase the yarn as a donation to Hospice, and then work on the shawls in groups or on one's own.

CHBC in conjunction with Duke Homecare and Hospice holds gatherings to teach the shawl-making, and to work on shawls and enjoy fellowship. We supply the instructions and instructors. We even have free yarn! When your shawl is completed, you can drop it by the church and it will be given to a Duke Hospice patient. This project includes folks affiliated with the church as well as others from the community who are interested in this project.

Meetings occur on the 4th Thursday of the even months in the Fireside Room, although there are instructors available to get you started at other times. You need to bring your knitting needle size 11 or 13 (beginners will prefer an 11; can be circular or straight) or size 'M', 'N' or 'P' crochet hook and approximately 555 yards of washable worsted or chunky cotton/poly blend yarn for knitting; a half skein more for crochet. Or look over our donated yarn supply. People of any age are welcome, and the Volunteer services will acknowledge hours for service requirements for students. For more information or to RSVP contact Katie Smith, <ksmith5306@aol.com> or 732-2340.
