How the Elder Board is Structured

The offices within the elder board include the chair, Vice chair, Secretary, and liaison with the Cross-Cultural Committee. These offices are held only by lay elders and for a term of one year. In rare instances an elder chair has served for two consecutive years. But experience has shown that this role requires a time commitment and energy level that is not easily sustained for that long. (For the activities of the elder chair, please see How the elders structure their time.)

A subset of the elders, referred to as the priority team, sets the agenda for the meetings of the full elder board, deals with business not requiring the full board (and informs the full board of decisions made), and discusses some business in advance of the elder board meeting in order to facilitate fruitful discussion among the elder board. The members of the priority team are: the chair: the Vice chair; the Pastor of Leadership; the Pastor of Teaching and Outreach; and on a rotating basis, the Pastors of Family Education and Young Adults.

Each of the elders also takes on ad hoc responsibilities. These have ranged from one-time contact with an individual about a matter of elder business to chairing a committee (e.g., a search committee for a new staff member).
