Children's Sunday School

What is the philosophy of the role of Sunday School in a child's spiritual upbringing?

Jesus' command to "make disciples" was given to his church, and there was no age limit on it! The purpose of the Sunday school program is to partner with parents in the discipleship of their children. The word disciple comes from the word that means "teach," and in the Bible we see that it refers to teaching in the context of a loving relationship. We ask our Sunday school teachers and assistants to make a commitment to be with your child each week in order to develop the kind of relationship which, combined with biblical teaching, leads to disciples!

What do we ask of parents?

  • Our primary request from parents is that they pray for their children's teachers--present and future.
  • Parents are asked to pick up their children within 10 minutes of the end of the service, & to have them use the restroom prior to class.
  • Parents are asked to help us understand their children, especially if they have special needs.
  • Many parents participate as teachers or assistants, but there is no pressure to do so. We have a "gift-based" recruiting philosophy, and are grateful for the participation of young adults, and people with grown children in our ministry, as well as parents.
  • We are very grateful for the support of parents as "homeroom moms or dads," substitutes, classroom organizers, and a host of other ways. We truly desire to form a two-way relationship in discipling the children of the church.

What do we do to support parents in their efforts at spiritual training of their children in the home?

  • We actively seek to give parents information about the structure and content of our program.

    • The parent manual contains summaries of our basic policies.
    • We provide parents with a copy of your child's entire curriculum including the Bible stories, Bible memory, prayer objectives, and Bible skills objectives for the entire year. These are bound into two publications: one for preschool and one for grades 1-5. This way, you can use the curriculum as a supplement or a guide to your efforts at home as you see fit.
    • Each week, your preschool child will have a coloring sheet that also tells the content of his or her lesson for that week.
  • Parents with children enrolled in the program periodically receive a copy of The Bridge, a publication seeking to build a bridge between the home and Sunday school. The Bridge has covered such topics as ideas for celebrating Christmas at home to teaching racial reconciliation in the home. Upcoming issues will focus on baptism and communion, and spiritual formation within the home.
  • Parenting with a Purpose is a class on Christian childrearing that is planned for each fall and each spring. It covers topics including discipline, leading your child to Christ, prayer in the home, etc.
