Why do I teach?

I didn’t know anything about teaching or about kids when I started. It matters so much to kids to be liked…just to be liked. I figured I could do that.

It’s been such a blessing to see what truly wonderful people these boys are becoming. The questions and comments these guys have! There aren’t many that haven’t been echoed for thousands of years by wise sages and philosophers using big flashy words. I can’t always answer them.

I just want them to know that God loves them, and He’s there for them, and that the creator of the universe put a cross up for all eternity to see that they are loved. We all slip so easily into thinking the opposite. We think that we’re loved for what we do, and worse, that when we give ourselves to people it doesn’t matter. I want these guys to know that someone cares about them who doesn’t have to. Maybe that’ll make it easier for them to see that God does too. Maybe that will help them become men of God who know, when they give of themselves to people, they’ve given something of precious value.

You shouldn’t expect to be prepared for this.

Dante is a neurobiology graduate student from Pensacola, FL. He started out with these guys in 3rd grade, and plans to follow them into middle school. (CHBC splits classes by gender in 4th and 5th grades.)
