Feeding Our Friends

By Adam Klein

On Christmas Day, members of the Young Adult ministry joined our brothers and sisters at Antioch Baptist Church to serve lunch to the homeless. The lunch, called “Feed Our Friends”, was hosted at Antioch Baptist in Northeast Central Durham and is an annual outreach to those who are without a warm meal or family on Christmas Day. In all, we served nearly 200 people, an incredible opportunity to embody the love of Christ on the day we celebrate his birth.

Reflecting back on this experience, my wife and I were challenged by the stark contrast between our cozy apartment in Durham and the stories we heard as we served mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce at Antioch. We spoke with one young man, about our age, whose Christmas celebration involved eating dinner at Antioch and then returning to a homeless shelter.  Another older man, who I gave a toiletry bag to, was so grateful to have received soap, a fresh toothbrush and deodorant.

I left Antioch more energized than when I went.  The mission opportunity reminded me that it truly is better to give than to receive. It also reminded me of Jesus’ incarnation on earth as he left heaven to enter our sin, brokenness and poverty.  We praise God for beginning to establish this tradition of service in our family and for the beautiful illustration of the true meaning of Christmas.
