“Strips and Curves ”
Cindy Clark
I made this quilt in 2003. I started it using a technique I had learned in a class, and using colors that I love. The events that unfolded that year, as I worked on the quilt, are forever recalled to me every time I look at it. It hangs on our kitchen wall, so I see it many times a day.
In 2003 my beloved Grandma, at age 96, finally went to heaven. She had been waiting for a couple of years, and was ready to go, but she left a hole in our lives. That same month the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on reentry and I listened to that news and thought of my Grandma as I worked on the strips of fabric in the quilt. In June, just 6 months after a lung cancer diagnosis, we lost my precious father. He was a great Dad, interested and proud and supportive. I spent many hours in my sewing room, grieving and cutting and stitching curves on this quilt.
Through the time of unprecedented grieving for my family, God was good. He sent people and comfort and even joy to remind me of his faithfulness. So this quilt, which I would have loved for its color and the pleasure of having worked on it, reminds me of loss and joy and redemption and the goodness of God.
