“String Quilt”

Fay Farrow

Made by Fay Farrow, Scott Williams’s great grandmother

This design is one of the simplest of traditional quilt designs, and is a great way to use up lots of scraps of fabric. Despite its lack of sophistication, it has a very satisfying appearance. Granny took squares of newspaper cut 8” on a side and hand-sewed strips of fabric to them to cover them. She trimmed the edges and sewed the squares together, removing the newspaper when the top was finished. A simple quilting pattern and nice sturdy edge finished it off.

She made this when Scott, her 8th great-grandchild, was born in 1994. It’s the last quilt she made for a great-grandchild, and one of the last quilts she made among the dozens that she made over the years. She is now 95 years old and lives in a nursing home, where she still talks about quilting and tatting and special people and events from her long years.
