“Teddy Bear's Picnic”

Emily Williams

The design of this quilt was inspired by the song “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”, that my father often sang to me and my teddy bear when I was very young. In the song we are warned not to go out to the woods today, because it’s not safe “Today is the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic!” The central section is made up of nine bears-paw blocks, representing brown and black bears, with even a polar bear in the middle. The trees on the edge represent the woods where they are having their picnic.

This quilt is entirely hand-sewn with minimal machine quilting. The proportions of this quilt would make it a queen-sized quilt but it’s only 15” square. I love to work a full-sized design in miniature because it’s something I’m actually likely to finish!
