“Jesus,
Lay Your Head in the Window”
Cheryl S. Harrison
Oil on Canvas
This painting was based on an African-American spiritual of the same
name. The song is slow and sort of mournful. The songwriter must have
been in a dark place in his or her life, and didn’t even feel worthy
of having Jesus come into the room, instead, he asks if Jesus could just
lay his head in the window. I painted this when I was going through a
trial in my life and I relate to this sentiment. I prayed everyday for
Jesus to be nearby, to be with me, even though I did not feel worthy
to be in his presence. The room in the painting is dark and empty, reflecting
the condition of the spirit of the person who is praying there. But Jesus
does come to be with that person, and we know by the light of the candle,
that his presence there brings hope.
Cheryl S. Harrison - "I
have always been an artist, but for a while, I took a break from being
an
artist in order to go to veterinary school and then to practice veterinary
medicine for a short time. That didn’t work out too well, and only
made me miserable, so I went back to doing what I should have been doing
all along, being the artist that God made me to be. About 6 years ago,
I was invited to join a small group of artistic people at my church to
form a committee and brainstorm together for ways that the arts could
be used to glorify God in our church. Since that time, I haven’t
looked back. I have been on fire with a passion to be a Christian artist,
to support other Christian artists, and to promote the arts as a vehicle
for the work of God’s spirit in people’s live and in their
relationships."
