“Steal
Away to Jesus”
Cheryl S. Harrison
Mixed Media
The inspiration for this painting was an old African-American spiritual
song called “Steal Away.” My husband had given me a CD of
an a cappella group performing spirituals. I listened to this song over
and over again, and there was one line in particular that really resonated
with me, and I thought, I have to paint that. The line was “the
trumpet sounds within-a my soul.” I felt like I had experienced
that. Just like the lady in the painting, my life was dull and gray until
God blew the breath of his spirit into me, and sounded his trumpet in
my soul, bringing my life vibrant color and purpose.
Cheryl S. Harrison - "I
have always been an artist, but for a while, I took a break from being
an
artist in order to go to veterinary school and then to practice veterinary
medicine for a short time. That didn’t work out too well, and only
made me miserable, so I went back to doing what I should have been doing
all along, being the artist that God made me to be. About 6 years ago,
I was invited to join a small group of artistic people at my church to
form a committee and brainstorm together for ways that the arts could
be used to glorify God in our church. Since that time, I haven’t
looked back. I have been on fire with a passion to be a Christian artist,
to support other Christian artists, and to promote the arts as a vehicle
for the work of God’s spirit in people’s live and in their
relationships."
