“Afternoon
Lilies in Bloom”
Krista Skelton
Watercolor
The great detective Sherlock Holmes once said, ‘Our highest assurance
of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All
other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are really necessary
for our existence in the first instance. But the flower is an extra.
Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition
of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that
we have much to hope from the flowers.’” Day lilies are so
named because they live only one day. They are little daily ‘extras’ -
delicate beauties given only to delight us. “If God so clothes
the flowers of the field...surely he cares about you and me.”
Krista Skelton began working
with watercolor while studying art history at Agnes Scott College in
Decatur, Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor's
degree
in Fine Art. She has been exhibiting her work off and on every since.
Krista comments, "Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth and son Jamie Wyeth,
pierced my soul with their incredible work in this medium. I have been
studying watercolor for over twenty-five years and they move me to this
day. Color brings me great joy and I want my paintings to bring that
same joy and happiness to others."
Krista paints in a simple style that reflects her commitment to simplicity
in all that she does. She adds, "It is very important for me to
let the natural light and beauty of my subjects some through the work.
I'm just beginning to do that with portraits. Recently, my primary subjects
have been flowers and natural landscapes. I love irises and grow them
in every available color. In addition, I grow a wide variety of other
flowers in my garden and paint each one in turn as the season passes."
Krista lives in South Boston, Virginia with her husband Dane and three
daughters.
