Photograph

I made this photo, like most photos I make, without any particular subject in mind. Only afterwards, staring day after day at this photo hanging on my bathroom wall do I see the possible significance and symbolism. I see the horse in the background representing freedom and innocence, and the chained gate in the foreground representing the barrier to that innocence and freedom. It is a gate that has been long closed by sin and human circumstance, yet we hold on to the hope that one day the gate will burst open and true freedom and innocence will become reality. The fact that the horse is out of focus reminds us that, "Now we see dimly." What we hope for is beyond what we can begin to imagine.
