“Fruit
of the Vine"
Sheana Funkhouser
Watercolor
I grew up in an area that had vineyards. It impressed me that during
the winter, the acres of plantings would stand dormant, the branches
pruned back to the dead looking vine trunk. When spring arrived, the
branches would begin to come to life, sending out the new vines that
would produce fruit. In our everyday lives, it is a miracle that we have
been grafted in to the True Vine. It is because of this that we can bear
fruit, our fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every
branch in me that bears no fruit, while every other branch that does
bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. No branch
can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you
bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches." John
15:1-2, 4-5
