“Spud and Tater Quilt”

Jan Pulley

Fabric / Quilt

The Spud and Tater Quilt is a poignant exercise of blending my artistic skills with my sewing skills that my mother handed down to me. A master craftsman in her own right, she conveyed many of the skills that I have relied on in my career of making art. This piece was conceived and executed during her last days of battling cancer in the hospital and provided a much needed object of joy and humor in a sad and difficult time. This piece celebrates my love for my first set of dogs, Spud and Tater, pit beagles.

Jan Jones Pulley
Having graduated in 1978 from UNC - Chapel Hill with BFA in painting and printmaking, Jan has focused her career on advertising design and illustration. Self employed for the last 16 years, Jan has worked for IBM, HowStuffWorks.com, North Carolina Forestry Association, Spectator Magazine, and several local advertising agencies. Jan lived in Italy in 1982 for 5 months where she enjoyed painting and selling her work to the local Tuscan community and featuring her work in group exhibitions. In 1999, Jan also illustrated the children's book, Big Dog Winnie, written by Kathy Davis. Jan discovered her love for teaching art to kids while working with Fifth Graders at Southwest Elementary in Durham for the last two academic years. She now instructs kids and adults in the fundamentals and basic techniques of drawing and painting out of her home in Durham. Jan and her husband, Larry, attend Grace Church in Chapel Hill.
