Concept of Leadership

From the world's perspective, leadership is based on power and authority. A hierarchical structure signifies a well-defined chain of command, and it is assumed that because everyone knows their job, the organization will function efficiently.

The church is certainly an organization. There are people in authority and programs that operate according to a chain of command. But a better illustration of the church would be that of an organism, a body. Christ, our Head, is the director of operations. He holds all things together. He is much more than a titular head; He is the functional head, the one on whom all in the body rely. It is of primary importance to recognize that we don't operate "in memory of Him" but through direct dependence upon Him.

God does supply leaders and He delegates authority to them that they might serve. The leader's primary role is to equip the members of the body with a framework for serving. The leaders are given their authority by a congregation that trusts their judgment and follows their lead in serving.

It is our hope that more leaders will put themselves forward to assume the role of servant. These leaders would initially show their trustworthiness in small things and then be given responsibility in greater things. The sanctioning of these leaders would then be given by Christ, the Head, as well as by the body, His Church.
